An extraordinary thriller—gripping, haunting, and marvelously told—about two friends growing up in a rapidly changing Boston, who must face the sins of their past in the midst of a series of brutal murders. “You came back here to bury your past. . . . Thing is, you gotta kill it first.” Kevin Pearce—baseball star, honor student, the pride of Brighton—was fifteen when he left town in the back of his uncle’s cab. He and his buddy Bobby Scales had just committed heinous violence for what they thought were the best of reasons. Kevin didn’t want a pass, but he was getting it anyway. Bobby would stay and face the music; Kevin’s future would remain bright as ever. At least that was the way things were supposed to work, except in Brighton things never work the way they’re supposed to. Twenty-six years later, Kevin is a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist for the Boston Globe. He’s never been back to his old block, having avoided his family and, especially, Bobby Scales. Then he learns his old friend is the prime suspect in a string of local murders. Suddenly, Kevin’s headed home—to protect a friend and the secret they share. To report this story to the end and protect those he loves, he must face not only an elusive, slippery killer, but his own corrupted conscience. A powerhouse of a thriller, Brighton is a riveting and elegiac exploration of promises broken, debts owed, and old wrongs made right . . . no matter what the cost.

The Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn is populated by what might be called "external emigrants", the people who in emigrating have changed nothing about their lives but their location. Brighton Beach, the novel about this Jewish immigrant community, is a satiric look at this island of Russian life in New York City. Levine, a well-known Odessa writer, arrives in New York and peddles his single book stories under several titles. There is also Pishonik, who runs the second-hand store and has a thriving under-the-counter business in stolen jewelry, just as in Odessa he'd dealt in produce. A taxi driver who sells drugs on the side and dreams of opening a luncheonette. Seva, who works odd jobs and dreams of buying a taxi. There's even a schoolboy with his own get-rich-quick mail-order scam. The intellectuals: Volodya, sets about beginning a new, healthier life as a housepainter; Aaron, who was a teacher in Odessa, opens a leather-goods factory and tries to run it, but thwarted at every turn. Marat, a would-be writer and too naïve to understand the venality which surrounds him, eventually gives the writer Levine his comeuppance. Faya, Seva's wife, hunts the stairwells in their apartment building in search of Volodya and a more genteel life. Beba and Mina, sisters long to be free of their tyrannical father. There is the Organization of Aid Emigrants, under the direction of the kindly and unsuspecting American Mrs. Welch, and run by emigrants. And throughout the book there is a chorus of emigrants strolling on the broadwalk, lining up for free eyeglasses or cheap apartments, and sending pictures, presents and boastful letters home to their Odessa relative about how good life is in America, This novel gives the reader a colorful picture of this thriving community on the sultry summer streets of Brooklyn.

Fans of Peter James and his bestselling Roy Grace series of crime novels know that his books draw on in-depth research into the lives of Brighton and Hove police and are set in a world every bit as gritty as the real thing. His friend Graham Bartlett was a long-serving detective in the city once described as Britain's 'crime capital'. Together, in Death Comes Knocking, they have written a gripping account of the city's most challenging cases, taking the reader from crime scenes and incident rooms to the morgue, and introducing some of the real-life detectives who inspired Peter James's characters. Whether it's the murder of a dodgy nightclub owner and his family in Sussex's worst non-terrorist mass murder or the race to find the abductor of a young girl, tracking down the antique trade's most notorious 'knocker boys' or nailing an audacious ring of forgers, hunting for a cold-blooded killer who executed a surfer or catching a pair who kidnapped a businessman, leaving him severely beaten, to die on a hillside, the authors skilfully evoke the dangerous inside story of policing, the personal toll it takes and the dedication of those who risk their lives to keep the public safe.

Moving between the luxurious hospitality of a British tourist town and the troubled city of Belfast, and told from the perspectives of a young IRA explosives expert, the deputy hotel manager and his teenage daughter, High Dive is an ambitious retelling of one of the most ambitious assassination attempts against the British establishment.
