Growing up in middle-class middle America, Sonya Huber viewed health care as did most of her peers: as an inconvenience or not at all. There were braces and cavities, medications and stitches, the family doctor and the local dentist. Finding herself without health insurance after college graduation, she didn't worry. It was a temporary problem. Thirteen years and twenty-three jobs later, her view of the matter was quite different. Huber's irreverent and affecting memoir of navigating the nation's health-care system brings an awful and necessary dose of reality to the political debates and propaganda surrounding health-care reform. "I look like any other upwardly mobile hipster," Huber says. "I carry a messenger bag, a few master's degrees, and a toddler raised on organic milk." What's not evident, however, is that she is a veteran of Medicaid and WIC, the federal government's supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children. In Cover Me, Huber tells a story that is at once all too familiar and rarely told: of being pushed to the edge by worry; of the adamant belief that better care was out there; of taking one mind-numbing job after another in pursuit of health insurance, only to find herself scrounging through the trash heap of our nation's health-care system for tips and tricks that might mean the difference between life and death.

GOD, WHY DIDN’T HE COVER ME? DISCLAIMER: This is not the typical, tell-all story; it is an uncompromising expose! Emotionally and sexually abused by religious leaders, God has anointed me in the area of my affliction to purely expose the devices of Satan and challenge the Body of Christ to raise the standard of holiness, purity, and integrity. As I am willing to become transparent in this three-part series (From Mistress to Ministry), my testimony capitalizes on scriptural references and information, in conjunction with past experiences, to present a biblical reformation that will promote genuine holiness in a wayward church. The principle of spiritual warfare is that we must be called to order, before we can advance to the next level of victory. My objective is three-fold: to nurture damaged spirits, to foster a healing process for victims of abuse, and to present the deliverance that repentance brings to those who are trapped in sexual sins. Pastors, can God count on you to avoid the damaging effects of committing spiritual incest? Husbands, can your wives trust you to shun the immoral acts of adultery/fornication? Fathers, can your daughters lean on you to steer clear of raping them of their innocence? Teachers, can our children expect you to be mentors, and not molesters? Executives, can your subordinates rely on you to refrain from sexual-harassment violations? Political officials, can your citizens depend on you to protect us against economic hardship? President of the United States, can God trust you to call this nation back to Him and snatch us out of the hand of the enemy? More than mere members of an organization or a population, we are your sons and daughters. Powerful ambassadors of God, will you cover us in our imperfections and not continue to exploit our vulnerabilities? “For the time is come that judgment [deliverance through investigation or examination] must begin at the house of God”... When the Kingdom of God does not influence the nation through truth and righteousness, the leadership of the nation is not equipped to positively affect its citizens. However, the nation cannot be healed until the church has been cleansed. Thus, we can not afford to remain complacent to the issues of clergy misconduct and the abuse and misuse of spiritual power. Secret issues can only be eradicated by exposing old wounds; otherwise, hidden infection will inevitably spread throughout the Body. In presenting this 21st-century exposition of the consequences of making ungodly decisions, I minister based on where I am, after I have judged myself – based on where I was. “Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the Word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscious in the sight of God” (II Cor. 4:1-2).

When Ren was twelve years old, she lost her older brother to a car accident. For twenty-five years he’s been a presence in her life, appearing with a song or a reflection in the moonlight. Her connection to the ghosts around her has made her especially sensitive as an archaeologist, understanding the bare outline of our ancestors, recreating lives and stories, and breathing life into those who occupied this world long before us. On the cusp of the most important find of her career, it is the ghosts who are guiding her way. But what they have to tell Ren about herself, and her developing relationship with the first man to really know her since her brother’s death, is unexpected—a discovery about the relationship between the past and the future, and the importance of living in the moment.

Life is full of daily battles. Why do good Christian soldiers-pastors, leaders, intercessors, and others-lose some of those battles? Is it possible that they fail to reach their greatest potential because they go to battle without the covering of a spiritual father? In this day of do-it-yourselfism, Bishop Bart Pierce says it's time to address our need for fathers-both spiritual and natural. It's God's desire and the groan of the world for mature sons to come forth Fathers, arise now, and raise up sons. Sons, arise and get your heads covered, and lets go to battle under the covering of God and our fathers. Then the curse of fatherlessness will be broken, and sons will turn to fathers and fathers will turn to sons, so that the Church can be the force God created it to be.
