SIR CRICHTON DAVEY'S study was a small one, and a glance sufficed to show that, as the secretary had said, it offered no hiding-place. It was heavily carpeted, and over-full of Burmese and Chinese ornaments and curios, and upon the mantelpiece stood several framed photographs which showed this to be the sanctum of a wealthy bachelor who was no misogynist. A map of the Indian Empire occupied the larger part of one wall. The grate was empty, for the weather was extremely warm, and a green-shaded lamp on the littered writing-table afforded the only light. The air was stale, for both windows were closed and fastened. Smith immediately pounced upon a large, square envelope that lay beside the blotting-pad. Sir Crichton had not even troubled to open it, but my friend did so. It contained a blank sheet of paper! "Smell!" he directed, handing the letter to me. I raised it to my nostrils. It was scented with some pungent perfume. "What is it?" I asked. "It is a rather rare essential oil," was the reply, "which I have met with before, though never in Europe. I begin to understand, Petrie." He tilted the lamp-shade and made a close examination of the scraps of paper, matches, and other debris that lay in the grate and on the hearth. I took up a copper vase from the mantelpiece, and was examining it curiously, when he turned, a strange expression upon his face. "Put that back, old man," he said quietly. Much surprised, I did as he directed. "Don't touch anything in the room. It may be dangerous." Something in the tone of his voice chilled me, and I hastily replaced the vase, and stood by the door of the study, watching him search, methodically, every inch of the room—behind the books, in all the ornaments, in table drawers, in cupboards, on shelves....

Insidious Workplace Behavior (IWB) refers to low-level, pervasive acts of deviance directed at individual or organizational targets. Because of its inherently stealthy nature, scientists have paid little attention to IWB, allowing us to know very little about it. With this book, that now is changing. The present volume - the first to showcase this topic - presents original essays by top organizational scientists who share the most current thinking about IWB. Contributors examine, for example, the many forms that IWB takes, focusing on its antecedents, consequences, and moderators. They also highlight ways that organizational leaders can manage and constrain IWB so as to attenuate its adverse effects. And to promote both theory and practice in IWB, contributors also discuss the special problems associated with researching IWB and strategies for overcoming them. Aimed at students, scholars, and practitioners in the organizational sciences - especially industrial-organizational psychology, organizational behavior, and human resource management - this seminal volume promises to inspire research and practice for years to come.

Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are in constant misdirected motion, unable to concentrate and complete assigned tasks, and behave impulsively. Their poor-self control frequently interferes with classroom learning and hinders their ability to relate to parents, teachers, and peers. Continued failure and criticism from those around them often has a profoundly negative impact on the ADHD child's self-concept. As a result, the child's internal disposition becomes one of hopelessness. Rather than anticipating and planning for success, ADHD children anticipate failure, believing there is little they can do to control their destiny. Many ADHD children become markedly despondent as they move from one developmental stage to the next. They engage in various forms of oppositional behavior believing they simply can not succeed. In short, they have given up. In order to alter this course, ADHD children must learn to replace hopelessness with hopefulness. The insidious and often unrecognized depression blocking this transition must be addressed. The purpose of this book is to provide parents, educators, and mental health professionals with a conceptual and practical framework for identifying and correcting this emotional virus, which can undermine even the most well-designed and implemented therapeutic and educational program.
