Every life holds times of happiness, but also times of disappointment and confusion. We feel pressure from all sides and wonder if God is really there. We call out to God, wanting to know the purpose and value of the season in which we find ourselves. With her wise counsel and gentle encouragement, bestselling author Pamela Reeve leads readers to see the often unrecognized miracle that God is working in our lives to bring about spiritual growth. Drawing from John 15, she reveals the secret to true and lasting peace in the midst of routine or change, in gladness or extreme sorrow. Lush vineyard photographs beautifully illustrate how God lovingly prunes us to bear the fruit of Christ living within us. A Vineyard in the Desert? It doesn't make sense. Why would the Master Gardner plant His tender vines in a hostile place where searing sun, nameless blights, and biting pests descend to consume the maturing grapes? Why would He cut back those vines so severely, exposing them to merciless heat? Because the sweetest, most bountiful harvest of fruit will burst from thise very vines, so carefully tended by a wise heart and loving hands. Within these pages of this stunningly beautiful book, Pam Reeve shows how our Lord brings hope and sweet new wine from the very pressure, sorrows, and dissappointments that encroah upon the seasons of our lives. Story Behind the Book An encounter with a desert vineyard in her youth led Dr. Reeve to a lifelong interest in vines and vineyards. In talks to college students and women’s groups around the country, she uses magnificent slides and a gentle message of courage and hope to the overwhelmed, the discouraged, and those enduring difficult seasons in their lives. This book will inspire readers to depend on Christ living within them to produce His character within and fruit through them. It is not our own religious efforts, but Christ living within us, that promotes spiritual growth. From the Hardcover edition.

A premier New Testament scholar explores how Jesus' trial and execution are portrayed in the New Testament and how that portrayal has affected biblical studies, Christian theology, and Jewish-Christian relations through history. Tomson has written an accessible, responsible analysis of the biblical accounts of Jesus' death, demonstrating how, through compounded misunderstandings, they contributed to anti-Jewish sentiment in the early church and later history. Tomson's question of how Jesus is to be understood in his first-century Judean context is a critical one not only for biblical scholars, but for anyone concerned about human rights and interreligious dialogue today.

John S. Kloppenborg gives a detailed analysis of one of the most difficult of Jesus' parables, the parable of the Tenants (Mark 12:1-12; Gospel of Thomas 65). He examines the ways in which Christians have typically read and mis-read the parable, and places the parable firmly in the context of the practices of ancient viticulture. The author models a new approach to the interpretation of the parables of Jesus. First, he critically engages the history of interpretation of the text, inquiring into the ideological interests that the parable has engaged during the history of its use in Christian churches and in political discourse. Second, he reconstructs the social world in which the parable was first told, in particular the economic, social, and legal aspects of ancient viticulture. He demonstrates that the parable of the Tenants has mostly been interpreted from the standpoint of those who wield social and political power, a strange irony considering the social status of the Jesus of history and the literary uses of the parable. All of the features common to the parable as it is told by Mark and the Gospel of Thomas make it a perfectly realistic story. It is only Mark's editing of the story that takes it beyond the realistic idiom characteristic of Jesus' other parables. The book concludes with a dossier of 58 papyrus documents relating to various aspects of viticulture and agrarian conflict. It was awarded the 2007 Francis W. Beare Book Award by the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies.

"What if the purpose or function of a parable is not to instruct but to haunt?" So begins Listening to the Parables of Jesus, edited by Edward F. Beutner, who suggests that, from time to time, even scholars scratch their heads in puzzlement over the yin and yang of Jesus' parables. This concise, well-edited book brings together insights from world-renowned scholars into the interpretation of parables. Lane McGaughy's opening essay provides high fidelity earphones that let readers hear the vivid and distinctive nature of the language of parable. Robert Miller offers an original treatment of two parables from the gospels of Matthew and Thomas, parables that he renames, "The Overpriced Pearl" and "The Treasure of Immorality." With his eye for narrative structure, film director Paul Verhoeven identifies fault lines in Matthew's version of the Vineyard Laborers and proposes an alternative version in which the first will be first. In his essay on the Leased Vineyard, Brandon Scott demonstrates how rabbinic parables can illuminate the otherwise shadowy nooks and crannies of a dark parable of violence found in Mark's gospel. The final three essays describe the parables globally as artful language eventsas fulcrums, so to speak, upon which our understanding of the world gets overturned and undermined. According to Robert Funk, Jesus parables are knotholes in the cosmic fence through which we glimpse the world as Jesus saw it. In Listening to the Parables of Jesus, leading scholars of the parables help readers find the knotholes. The rest is up to them.

?Do you not understand this parable?? is a question Jesus posed to his disciples (Mark 4:13). Just as the first disciples often did not understand Jesus? many parables, so it is for listeners and readers nearly two thousand years later. In Parables of the Kingdom, Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan helps readers to ?hear? and ?see? and ?understand? the parables of Jesus. She offers a general introduction to the use of parables in the life and ministry of Jesus and the early church. In addition, Getty-Sullivan helps readers learn to interpret parables, to enter into what the parables can reveal about Jesus and his audience, about the evangelists and their communities, and about how we are to understand the Kingdom of God today. Parables of the Kingdom helps us hear and see Jesus? parables with new eyes and renewed hearts?thereby allowing the parables to transform our lives and help us respond with new conviction to the gospel?s power in our world.?In Parables of the Kingdom Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan demonstrates how the parables of Jesus, which use ordinary people, events and things, draw the reader to the deepest heart of the Gospels: the revelation of Jesus Christ (Christology) and what it means to follow him (discipleship). She gives the reader a thorough view of Jesus? ministry and mission in this scholarly and clear to follow, in depth and intriguing presentation. Deliberate attention to the details of each parable heightens not only the reader?s understanding of the Scripture, but excites the imagination as well. One is invited into the world of the parables and thereby, into the world of Jesus. This motivates the reader to come to know Christ anew, once again, and to take up the challenge to follow him by recognizing the possibilities of the Kingdom of God in every day life.? Maureen Crossen, Ph.D. Associate Professor and Theology Department Chair Carlow University Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ?This work is clear, informative, and inspirational. Beginners will enjoy its many insights into Jesus? parables. Even old pros in parable interpretation will learn a new lesson or two and have their hearts warmed to know Jesus more fully and follow him more faithfully.? Robert Karris, O.F.M. Christ knew that the splendor of heaven is too great for us to bear just now, and so he used parables as clues to the mystery of paradise. In them are hints of heaven, and they offer profound spiritual advice meant to guide us on the road to eternal glory. In our age, Christ's Parables are often reduced to exercises in moralism. In these pages, Fr. George Rutler - acclaimed author and EWTN television host - unveils these deceptively simple stories, showing you their hidden meanings and how they apply to our own age and way of life. Let Fr. Rutler take you on an enriching tour of Scripture's 24 parables as you learn: Tares in the Field of the Lord: Why it's necessary that scandals beset the Church - and how it brings about a stronger harvest. The Mustard Seed: Why it gave hope to the early Church and prefigures her glorious future. The Yeast: How God speaks in a gentle and inward voice which melts the soul, and how you could be drowning Him out. The Hidden Treasure: Are you responding properly to the unique gifts Christ has given you? The Net: Many will be sifted out. How to be sure you're among the souls He keeps. The Unmerciful Servant: Not only must you forgive, you must convert the offender. Are you a channel for God's grace? Laborers in the Vineyard: Are you letting selfishness and pride get in the way of the salvation of your neighbor's soul? The Two Sons: The dangers of agnosticism. Are you guilty? You may be astonished at the answer. The Marriage of the King's Son: Why frequent reception of the sacraments is necessary for dwelling at the wedding feast. The Ten Virgins: There's a difference between watching and being prepared for Christ's return. Are you ready? The Ten Talents: God has given you a special gift. Do you know what it is, and how you should use it? The Two Debtors: How to know if you are going "through the motions" without Christ's love. The Good Samaritan: Do you know the most overlooked element of this parable? It may surprise you. The Rich Fool: Our capacity for self-deception is limitless. Learn the only way to be truly know yourself. The Barren Fig Tree: Time is running out, and we have one last chance to cultivate virtue. Will you bear fruit in time? The Great Supper: There's room for all in the heavenly banquet, but not all will find room. Are you making excuses that lead you into isolation? The Lost Sheep and the Lost Coin: Do you judge others, or do you receive them as Christ did? Why your approach to lost sheep could cost you your soul. The Prodigal Son: Learn how this famous parable explains why God created mankind and chose to give Himself to us. The Unjust Steward: The world is filled with evildoers. Are you mirroring the light of Christ? The Rich Man and Lazarus: Learn the evils of self-sufficiency, and the dangers of taking gifts for granted. The Unjust Judge: Why you must persevere in prayer despite your continued sins. The Pharisee and the Publican: Why even though you may not commit great sins, your failure to put faith into action could ruin your soul.
