Ready or not, you are in the run of your life. Whether you run like lightning, or crawl at a snail’s pace, God has chosen you to run the race set before you. His word calls to you: “Let us throw off everything that hinders…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Heb 12:1-2) Not an athlete? Doesn’t matter. Still warming up? The race has already begun. Winded and limping? Keep moving forward. Stumbled or fallen? You have not been disqualified. Or maybe, while running in perfect stride, you’ve hit daunting obstacles. Do not give up! Why? Because this isn’t a one-person race. It’s a relay. You are not alone, but are part of a team assembled by God to achieve his purposes. And God is unstoppable. Fortunately, God has not left you on our own to muddle through the race untrained. His word and his story written into the lives of believers are filled with the wisdom to train you to successfully run the divine relay. Discover how to receive your baton, how to grasp firmly and carry forward all that God entrusts to you—his uncompromising truth, his piercing light, his radical change, his world-transforming love. And be trained in how to release what is no longer yours to carry so that every member of God’s team can press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus. In Unstoppable, best-selling author, global evangelist, and human- trafficking activist, Christine Caine, mesmerizes us with true stories and eternal principles that equip us to run the race we were born to win, receiving and releasing the baton of faith in sync with our team, the body of Christ. God has plucked us out of eternity, positioned us in time, and given us gifts and talents to serve him in this generation to bring the light of Jesus Christ into a broken world. Our race is now. This is our time in history. We’ve been handed the baton of faith and asked to carry that light and dispel the darkness. If we receive and pass on the baton in the divine relay, we will be unstoppable.

This major retelling of the Suez Crisis of 1956—one of the most important events in the history of US policy in the Middle East—shows how President Eisenhower came to realize that Israel, not Egypt, is America’s strongest regional ally. In 1956 President Nasser of Egypt moved to take possession of the Suez Canal, thereby bringing the Middle East to the brink of war. The British and the French, who operated the canal, joined with Israel in a plan to retake it by force. Despite the special relationship between England and America, Dwight Eisenhower intervened to stop the invasion. In Ike’s Gamble, Michael Doran shows how Nasser played the US, invoking America’s opposition to European colonialism to drive a wedge between Eisenhower and two British Prime Ministers, Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden. Meanwhile, in his quest to make himself the strongman of the Arab world, Nasser was making weapons deals with the USSR and destabilizing other Arab countries that the US had been courting. The Suez Crisis was his crowning triumph. In time, Eisenhower would conclude that Nasser had duped him, that the Arab countries were too fractious to anchor America’s interests in the Middle East, and that the US should turn instead to Israel. Affording deep insight into Eisenhower and his foreign policy, this fascinating and provocative history provides a rich new understanding of how the US became the power broker in the Middle East.

Democracy in Europe has been a recent phenomenon. Only in the wake of World War II were democratic frameworks secured, and, even then, it was decades before democracy truly blanketed the continent. Neither given nor granted, democracy requires conflict, often violent confrontations, and challenges to the established political order. In Europe, Geoff Eley convincingly shows, democracy did not evolve organically out of a natural consensus, the achievement of prosperity, or the negative cement of the Cold War. Rather, it was painstakingly crafted, continually expanded, and doggedly defended by varying constellations of socialist, feminist, Communist, and other radical movements that originally blossomed in the later nineteenth century. Parties of the Left championed democracy in the revolutionary crisis after World War I, salvaged it against the threat of fascism, and renewed its growth after 1945. They organized civil societies rooted in egalitarian ideals which came to form the very fiber of Europe's current democratic traditions. The trajectories of European democracy and the history of the European Left are thus inextricably bound together. Geoff Eley has given us the first truly comprehensive history of the European Left--its successes and failures; its high watermarks and its low tides; its accomplishments, insufficiencies, and excesses; and, most importantly, its formative, lasting influence on the European political landscape. At a time when the Left's influence and legitimacy are frequently called into question, Forging Democracy passionately upholds its vital contribution.
