Gynecologic healthcare needs of women who have sex with women (WSW) have been examined from the perspective of WSW, but not from the healthcare provider's perspective. In this study, advance practice registered nurses' (APRNs) knowledge, perceptions, and preparedness for providing gynecological healthcare services to WSW were examined. A mixed quantitative and qualitative approach was used to examine study objectives. Predominately female APRNs (N = 107) completed a survey of their perceptions of the gynecologic healthcare needs of WSW. Eleven female APRNs participated in interviews to elucidate the APRN experience and training for working with patients who are WSW. Advance practice registered nurse participants endorsed beliefs that WSW are at low risk for sexually transmitted infections compared to women who have sex with men (WSM), but noted no differences in perceptions of cervical cancer risk, STI testing recommendations or Papanicolaou testing recommendations. Barriers to gynecologic healthcare identified by APRNs included lack of training for working with WSW and lack of ready access to treatment protocols or guidelines, among others. Overall, APRN perceptions of WSW health risk and reports of sexually transmitted infection screening and Pap testing recommendations are incongruent with those reports made by WSW in the existing literature. APRN perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to gynecologic healthcare experienced by WSW are similar to existing WSW reports of their gynecologic healthcare experiences.
