Two Hearts, One God.? Should Anything Else Matter? Zora Nella Hampton Johnson knows exactly where she comes from—and her daddy won't let her forget. Of course for that privilege he keeps her in Prada and Kate Spade, Coach and YSL. He chooses her boyfriend, her car, her address, and ignores her love of painting, art, and the old ways of her grandaddy's soulful AME church—where the hymns pleaded, cajoled, and raised the roof. Her daddy may be a preacher, but some-where among the thousands of church members, the on-site coffee house, and the JumboTron, Zora lost God. And she wants Him back. Nicky Parker, a recent graduate of Berkeley and reformed playboy, also suffers the trials of being a preacher's kid, and he can't remember the last time he saw eye-to-eye with his white, racist, Southern Baptist father. What he does remember—and it will be forever burned in his brain despite myriad prayers to Jesus—is the way Zora looked the first time he saw her. Like Nefertiti. Only better. When they meet at a bible study far from their respective home churches, the first churlish, sarcastic sparks that fly sizzle with defensiveness. But God has a special way of feeding the flames and though of different flocks, these two lost sheep will find Him and much, much more. If a miracle happened to you, wouldn't you tell everyone? What if they thought you were crazy? Poor in health but rich in faith, Gina Merritt—a young, broke, African-American single mother—sits in a pew on Ash Wednesday and has a holy vision. When it fades, her palms are bleeding. Anthony Priest, the junkie sitting beside her, instinctively touches her when she cries out, but Gina flees in shock and pain. A prize-winning journalist before drugs destroyed his career, Anthony is flooded with a sense of well-being and knows he is cured of his addiction. Without understanding why, Anthony follows Gina home to find some answers. Together they search for an answer to this miraculous event and along the way they cross paths with a skeptical evangelical pastor, a gentle Catholic priest, a certifiable religious zealot, and an oversized transvestite drug dealer, all of whom lend their opinion. It's a quest for truth, sanity, and grace . and an unexpected love story.

Through New Mexico’s Official Scenic Historic Markers we learn about the people, the geological features, and the historical events that have made the Land of Enchantment a place unlike any other. An index to our history, these markers tell an incredible story about our cultures and origins. This revised and expanded edition of Roadside New Mexico provides additional information about these sites and includes approximately one hundred new markers, sixty-five of which document the contribution of women to the history of New Mexico. Now structured alphabetically for easier identification, each essay also offers suggestions of similar Historic Markers to help readers explore each topic further. In addition, Pike includes entries on “Ghost Markers”—those sites missing from the road that still impart significant historical lessons. Roadside New Mexico delivers a useful companion for travelers who want to understand more about the landscapes and inhabitants of the state.

How does the ‘factual’ shape our sense of sexuality and self? How far have representations of lesbianism actually moved from the pathology and deviancy of the 1920s and 1930s to the lesbian chic of the 1990s? How do contemporary ideas of autobiography intersect with a sense of sexualised self? And to what degree is the notion of a specific lesbian identity complicated by the contradictions of identity politics and the heterosexism of critical language? In this fascinating literary study, Nicky Hallett addresses these questions by examining cultural representations of lesbianism and the personal testimony of individuals, including Virginia Woolf, Alice B. Toklas, Gertrude Stein, Vita Sackville-West and Radclyffe Hall, and other, less familiar, figures. She considers lesbian representation within the broader context of gender, sexuality, race and the construction of identity in a postmodern culture, and questions ideas of the coded, the indirect and the hidden of the 1920s and of the ‘out’ of the queer 1990s. Building on the numerous studies of lesbianism in fiction and popular culture, Nicky Hallett explores the construction of lesbian identities in popular and critical biographies, autobiographies and diaries, as well as newspaper stories, interviews, obituaries, photographs and reviews. Lesbian Lives extends the boundaries of enquiry with an investigation into the ways in which lesbians represent themselves and are represented by others in the so-called ‘factual modes’ of non-fiction.
